Idaho license plate county codes
A standard Idaho license plate begins with a code for the county where the vehicle is registered: a letter, or a number and a letter. The letter is the first letter of the county name, and the number tells apart the counties that share a first letter, in alphabetical order. Ada is 1A and Adams is 2A; Bannock is 1B and Butte is 10B. Seven counties are the only one starting with their letter and carry the letter alone: Elmore, Idaho, Kootenai, Nez Perce, Shoshone, Valley and Washington are E, I, K, N, S, V and W.
The codes are set by the Idaho Transportation Department in its rule on license plate provisions, IDAPA 39.02.60, section 100, and are required by Idaho Code section 49-443, which says the plate must identify the county in which the vehicle is registered. The table below is that rule’s list, in county order and then in code order. Each county links to its page on this site.
