Idaho nonfarm employment (CES)

Monthly survey of employers estimating the number of paid employees on nonfarm payrolls, by state and industry. Counted from a sample survey of employer payrolls, unlike the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW), which is compiled from the administrative unemployment-insurance records nearly every employer must file.

Caveats

The annual figure is the mean of the year's 12 seasonally adjusted monthly values, BLS's own annual-average convention.
The source publishes this series in thousands of persons to one decimal place; figures here are precise only to the nearest hundred.
Idaho Department of Labor republishes this BLS series for Idaho; it is not an independent source.

Caveats

The index is set so the average of the years 1982 through 1984 equals 100; a value is meaningful only compared with the index in another year, not against a dollar amount.
This is CPI-U (all urban consumers), U.S. city average, all items, not seasonally adjusted. BLS publishes no Idaho or other state-level Consumer Price Index; the nearest published sub-national series is the CPI-U for the West region, a multi-state Census region that is not Idaho and is not the series stored here.
The annual average for a year is not published until BLS has released all twelve months of that year, so the newest year in this dataset lags the current year by several months.
BLS published an annual average for 2025 based on eleven of the twelve months: October 2025 data was not collected because of that year's lapse in appropriations, the same gap documented in this site's Unemployment (LAUS) dataset.
Early years in this series carry one decimal place of precision and recent years carry three, exactly as BLS publishes them; this reflects a change in the Bureau's own published precision over the series' history, not a difference this site introduced.

Measures

Consumer Price Index (1982-84=100) (index): The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), all items, U.S. city average, not seasonally adjusted, annual average. Set so the average index across 1982, 1983 and 1984 equals 100.

Unemployment (LAUS)

Monthly and annual estimates of the labor force, employment, unemployment and the unemployment rate for the nation, states and counties, produced with the states as BLS's cooperating agencies.

Caveats

Idaho's annual figures are BLS's own published annual-average row; every other geography's is the mean of that year's not-seasonally-adjusted monthly rates, BLS's own method.
LAUS annual estimates are revised the following spring against updated survey and Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) inputs.
Idaho Department of Labor republishes these same BLS figures for Idaho; it is not an independent source.
LAUS measures the labor force, employment and unemployment by place of residence, unlike the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages, which counts jobs by place of work. County-level figures are model-based estimates (BLS's 'Handbook method'), built from the Current Population Survey, the Current Employment Statistics program, QCEW and unemployment insurance claims, because the Current Population Survey alone is too small to directly measure employment and unemployment in a single county.

Measures

Unemployment rate (percent): Unemployed as a share of the civilian labor force. Annual figures are not seasonally adjusted; the recent-months series for Idaho and the US is seasonally adjusted.
Labor force (people): Civilian labor force: employed plus unemployed people 16 and older. Annual, not seasonally adjusted.
Employment (people): Number of people employed, by place of residence. Annual, not seasonally adjusted.

State occupational wages (BLS)

BLS's own state-by-state release of the Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey, so every state and the nation can be compared on the same basis.

Caveats

Wages cover wage and salary workers only; the self-employed are excluded.
Annual wages for occupations typically paid by the hour are calculated as the hourly wage times 2,080 hours, not a measured annual figure.
Reference period is May of the estimate year, not a full-year average.
BLS states that OEWS estimates are not designed to measure employment or wage change from one year to the next, since the three-year rotating sample and estimation methods can shift between years.
A median wage above BLS's top-coded level prints as # in the source and is omitted here, never stored as the ceiling value.
A blank, *, or ** cell means BLS suppressed the estimate for sample size or reliability; the observation is omitted, never stored as zero.

Occupational employment, all occupations (people): Estimated total employment across all occupations, rounded to the nearest 10, excluding the self-employed.
Mean annual wage, all occupations (usd): Mean annual wage across all occupations.
Median annual wage, all occupations (usd): Median (50th percentile) annual wage across all occupations.
Median annual wage by major occupation group (usd): Median annual wage for each of the 22 major Standard Occupational Classification groups, most recent year only.

Employment and wages (QCEW)

Employment and wages covered by state unemployment insurance laws, compiled from employer reports and covering roughly 95 percent of US jobs. Annual averages, total covered (all ownership sectors combined) and by NAICS supersector.

Caveats

'Total covered' means federal, state, and local government plus private employment combined, across all industries.
Industry breakdowns use BLS's 12-category supersector of the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS), not the 2-category domain or 21-category sector level, for Idaho and the US only.
Industry-level combined-ownership figures are the sum of BLS's four separately published ownership sectors (federal, state, local, private), not a single published row.
A row QCEW suppresses for confidentiality is omitted rather than estimated; Idaho's supersector breakdown can have fewer than 12 industries in a given year.
Idaho Department of Labor republishes these QCEW figures for Idaho; it is not an independent survey.
QCEW counts jobs and wages at the place of work, not the worker's place of residence, unlike the Current Population Survey's household-based counts. A county's average wage and employment reflect who works there, not who lives there, so a county with few establishments can be dominated by a single large employer.
