Caveats

Period is the calendar year the school year begins in, matching the State Department of Education's own enrollment workbook (period 2024 is school year 2024-25).
The EDGE geographic update exists only from school year 2015-16 through 2024-25; NCES has not yet published a 2025-26 edition.
A district whose boundary crosses a county line is assigned to a single county by NCES's own geographic update, not divided between counties.
One row, Pleasant Valley Elementary District for school year 2015-16, is kept exactly as NCES's file states it though it places the district in Malheur County, Oregon; NCES corrects this to Owyhee County, Idaho beginning school year 2016-17.
A district's name as the State Department of Education's own workbook prints it is not always available for the same school year NCES lists the district; the department's workbook does not carry a comparable row for several state-run special-purpose LEAs (Department of Correction and Department of Juvenile Corrections education programs, the School for the Deaf and the Blind) in most years, and a newly opened charter LEA can appear in one publisher's file before the other's.

Idaho public school directory

Every Idaho public school the State Department of Education currently reports enrollment for, with its city, county, grade span, charter and virtual status and school type from the National Center for Education Statistics, and counts of schools by type, charter status and virtual status.

Caveats

A school's enrollment is the State Department of Education's own newest-year (2025-26) count; every other field is from NCES's own newest school directory (2024-25) except virtual status, which NCES stopped reporting for Idaho after school year 2023-24.
Idaho Digital Learning Academy, a state-run supplemental online-course provider, teaches students who remain enrolled at their own school and has no fall membership count of its own, so it does not appear as a row in this table.
A school the department stopped reporting fall enrollment for is left out of this table entirely, whatever NCES's own status field says; a school NCES's newest directory already lists as Closed, New or Future, by contrast, is kept if the department still reports it.
Of 791 schools the department reports, 773 are matched to an NCES school id (766 by their department and NCES id numbers agreeing, 7 more by name after the department renumbered the school's local education agency since NCES's directory was compiled); the remaining 18 have no NCES match, mostly small online programs, two schools opened in 2025-26 after NCES's newest directory, and the interstate border-agreement buildings that serve mostly non-Idaho residents. An unmatched school's city, county, charter status, virtual status, grade span, school type and NCES id are null rather than guessed.
Virtual status is not a trend: NCES collected it for Idaho only in school year 2023-24 (29 schools "Exclusively virtual", 8 "Primarily virtual", 1 "Supplemental Virtual"), and its newest Idaho release (2024-25) reports every school's virtual status as "Not reported". A school this dataset marks virtual is one NCES classified as exclusively or primarily virtual in 2023-24; a school opened since then has no virtual classification.
Counts charter local education agencies' own buildings that NCES's directory flags as charter schools, not SDE's count of charter LEAs (education.charter_school_count, dataset sde-school-enrollment); the two differ because a charter LEA can run more than one building and because a few charter schools have no NCES match (see above).

Schools by charter status (count): Number of Idaho public schools NCES's directory flags as a charter school versus not, school year 2024-25.

Caveats

NAEP scores and achievement-level percentages are estimates from a sample of students in each state, not a count of every student.
Mathematics and reading are scored on separate scales, and grade 4 and grade 8 are scored on separate scales within each subject, so a score is comparable only within its own subject and grade, never across them.
Every figure covers public school students only, including the national figure, so a state's figures and the national figure are on the same basis.
State participation in this assessment was voluntary before 2003, so a state can be missing from an earlier assessment year.
The Nation's Report Card publishes these figures rounded to whole numbers; the figures here come from the underlying data service and are kept to one decimal place.
The Proficient achievement level represents solid academic performance for the grade assessed, including competency over challenging subject matter and the ability to apply it to real-world situations; it is a higher bar than performing at grade level, and NAEP says it should not be read as one.

Caveats

The pupil/teacher ratio counts teachers of students with disabilities and other special education staff, so it runs higher than a classroom class-size figure.
Public school enrollment (table 203.20) is fall Common Core of Data state-reported membership, a different count and date than the State Department of Education's own fall figure.
Higher education enrollment (table 304.10) counts every public, private nonprofit and for-profit degree-granting institution in a state, not just Idaho's public institutions that the State Board of Education counts.
Tables 208.40 and 304.10 run through fall 2022, the newest edition of each; table 211.60 runs through school year 2021-22, its newest edition.
NCES's state teacher salaries (table 211.60) are National Education Association estimates of average classroom teacher salary, which differ in definition from the State Department of Education's own certificated-staff average used for Idaho's own average teacher salary figure.
The adjusted cohort graduation rate (ACGR) is the percentage of public high school freshmen who graduate with a regular diploma (or, from school year 2017-18 on, a state-defined alternate diploma for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities) within four years of starting 9th grade; a student's starting cohort is adjusted for transfers in and out, emigration, and death.
Idaho, Kentucky, and Oklahoma have no ACGR for school year 2011-12, and Idaho has none for 2012-13, because those states had not yet started reporting ACGR data; Idaho's own series begins at school year 2013-14.
Table 219.46 (prepared January 2024) is the newest edition NCES has published for this table, so school year 2021-22 is the newest adjusted cohort graduation rate this dataset can offer.
NCES notes that some states changed their diploma requirements for school year 2019-20 to account for the coronavirus pandemic, which may make that year's ACGR less comparable with other years.

Where sources disagree

Public school enrollment (NCES), Idaho, 2024: the Idaho State Department of Education publishes 318,067. NCES Digest of Education Statistics table 203.20 (fall 2024 Common Core of Data state-reported enrollment) gives 315,626 for Idaho. The State Department of Education's own fall 2024 membership count is 318,067. NCES compiles its figure from state-reported totals for its own national survey; the State Department of Education's figure is Idaho's own fall membership count and count date.
Postsecondary enrollment (NCES), Idaho, 2022: the Idaho State Board of Education publishes 78,601. NCES Digest of Education Statistics table 304.10 (fall 2022 IPEDS enrollment) gives 125,249 for Idaho. The State Board of Education's own fall 2022 headcount is 78,601. NCES's IPEDS-based figure counts every public, private nonprofit, and for-profit degree-granting institution in Idaho; the State Board of Education's figure counts headcount at Idaho's public four-year institutions and community colleges only.
Average teacher salary (NCES), Idaho, 2021: the Idaho State Department of Education publishes $54,232. NCES table 211.60 gives $54,232 for school year 2021-22, a National Education Association estimate of average classroom teacher salary. The State Department of Education's figure is its own payroll average for staff whose job assignment it classifies as Teacher, a different definition.
