Compared with other states

Every state is compared on imprisonment rate from the Bureau of Justice Statistics: The Bureau of Justice Statistics' own published imprisonment rate: sentenced prisoners per 100,000 U.S. residents of all ages, not the separate rate it also prints per 100,000 residents aged 18 or older. The headline figure above is in fiscal year 2026; this comparison is in 2023.

Caveats

  • This is a point in time count as of June 30 each year, not an average daily population or a count of admissions during the year.
  • The count includes people IDOC holds in county jails and in a contracted out of state facility in Arizona, so it is not a count of people held inside Idaho's own state prisons alone.
  • IDOC's reports also break the incarcerated population down by crime group, age and gender, but those figures print only as percentage labels on a chart image with no adjoining table, so they are not in this dataset.
  • Facility type and legal status are two different breakdowns of the same population, and each one's categories sum to the total incarcerated population for its fiscal year.
  • IDOC's FY2021 and FY2022 reports do not print their fiscal year's total incarcerated population in a table or as a chart value, so neither year carries a total here; the FY2021 report states one inside a narrative sentence, and that figure disagrees with its own tables.

Where sources disagree

  • Total incarcerated population, Idaho, FY2021: the narrative text of IDOC's own FY2021 report publishes 8,515. IDOC's FY2021 report states in a sentence that the population fell 2.9% in the fiscal year, from 8,775 to 8,515. The same report's Facility Type table and its status totals for June 30, 2021 each sum to 8,518, and the FY2022 report restates the facility rows without changing that sum. This dataset carries no total for FY2021, because IDOC prints one only in that sentence and it does not agree with the tables the rest of this dataset is read from.
  • Total incarcerated population, Idaho, FY2023: the Bureau of Justice Statistics, National Prisoner Statistics publishes 9,829. IDOC counts 9,332 people incarcerated on June 30, 2023. The Bureau of Justice Statistics counts 9,829 under Idaho's jurisdiction on December 31, 2023. The two are six months apart in a period when the population was rising, and they count different things: IDOC's figure is who it holds, in state prisons, reentry centers, county jails and a contracted Arizona facility, while the Bureau's is who Idaho is legally responsible for wherever they are held. Both are correct for what each measures.

Caveats

  • A prisoner is counted under whichever state's or the federal government's jurisdiction is legally responsible for them, regardless of the facility where they are actually held, including another jurisdiction's prison, a privately operated facility, or a local jail.
  • Figures are a snapshot on December 31 of the year, not a count of admissions, releases, or an average population over the year.
  • Each annual edition of this report covers two years. Where a later edition gives a different figure than an earlier edition for a year both cover, the later edition's figure is kept, since the Bureau of Justice Statistics revises earlier counts.
  • The District of Columbia does not appear in this dataset. DC felony sentencing has been the Federal Bureau of Prisons' responsibility since December 31, 2001, so no separate DC jurisdiction total is published.
  • A small number of state and year combinations have no published figure and are left out here rather than estimated.
  • This is the rate the Bureau of Justice Statistics itself publishes, using the U.S. Census Bureau's population estimate for January 1 of the following year as the denominator; it is not calculated here.
