- Update frequency
- Annual. IDOC publishes the report for a fiscal year after it ends June 30.

Caveats
- This is a point in time count as of June 30 each year, not an average daily population or a count of people entering supervision during the year.
- IDOC's active supervision total excludes people who are incarcerated, in federal custody, deported, detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), absconded, on parole violation status, on a bench warrant, or on unsupervised probation.
- This population is supervised in the community and is separate from and additional to the number of people IDOC incarcerates in its prisons, reentry centers, county jails and a contracted out of state facility; adding the two together gives everyone under IDOC's authority, a different and larger figure than either population alone.
- IDOC's community population reports render some years' total-population chart values only as an image chart with no adjoining text, so this dataset has no total for fiscal years 2021 and 2022.
- The probation and parole breakdown draws from two different tables depending on the year. Fiscal years 2022 through 2025 come from the report's own Probation Population and Parole Population charts. Fiscal years 2019, 2020 and 2021, where those charts print no data-point text, instead come from the report's district-by-district breakdown table, read only for the statewide total row it already prints.
- IDOC's report for fiscal year 2021 states its probation and parole figures for that year one way; its report for fiscal year 2022 restates fiscal year 2021 with different figures, and this dataset uses the newer figures. The newer figures are corroborated separately: the fiscal year 2021 report also states in a narrative sentence, with no accompanying table, that the community population fell to 16,579 that year, and 16,579 is exactly what the newer probation and parole figures add up to. That sum is not itself stored as a total, since it is arithmetic on two breakdown figures rather than a total IDOC states in a table, so fiscal year 2021 still has no total in this dataset.
- IDOC's own reports state a total active supervision population for fiscal year 2024 of 15,911, which is 580 fewer than the sum of that same year's own printed probation population (11,767) and parole population (4,724). Of the five fiscal years that carry both a stated total and both parts, the other four reconcile to the person, so the gap is particular to the fiscal year 2024 figures rather than a difference between what the total and the two parts count. This dataset stores all three exactly as IDOC prints them and adjusts none of them.
Measures
- Total community supervision population (count): Total number of people the Idaho Department of Correction supervises in the community, on probation or parole, on June 30.
- Community supervision population by type (count): People the Idaho Department of Correction supervises in the community on June 30, by probation or parole.

Caveats
- This is a point in time count as of June 30 each year, not an average daily population or a count of admissions during the year.
- The count includes people IDOC holds in county jails and in a contracted out of state facility in Arizona, so it is not a count of people held inside Idaho's own state prisons alone.
- IDOC's reports also break the incarcerated population down by crime group, age and gender, but those figures print only as percentage labels on a chart image with no adjoining table, so they are not in this dataset.
- Facility type and legal status are two different breakdowns of the same population, and each one's categories sum to the total incarcerated population for its fiscal year.
- A rider is a person sentenced to a period of incarceration over whom the court has retained jurisdiction while IDOC assesses them for programming, after which the court decides whether to place them on probation or impose the full term.
- A parole violator is a person who violated the conditions of parole and is held in this status until a hearing decides whether parole is reinstated or revoked.
- IDOC's own reports label the prison category Institutions through the FY2020 report and Prisons from the FY2021 report on, and label the contracted out of state category Contract Beds through the FY2022 report and Out of State Beds from the FY2023 report on, for the same figures; this dataset uses the later names for every year.
- From the FY2026 report on, IDOC prints one row per facility instead of four category rows. The facility types here sum those rows: prisons are the in-state prisons, reentry centers the community reentry centers, out of state beds the Florence and Saguaro contract facilities, and county jails the County Jails row plus the named Adams, Bonneville and Jefferson county jails. The FY2025 figures computed this way match the FY2025 report's own category rows.
- IDOC's FY2022 report moved people from the prison total to the reentry center total for fiscal year 2021 compared with the FY2021 report's own figures for that year; the total for that year did not change, and the newer report's breakdown is stored here.
- IDOC's FY2021 and FY2022 reports do not print their fiscal year's total incarcerated population in a table or as a chart value, so neither year carries a total here; the FY2021 report states one inside a narrative sentence, and that figure disagrees with its own tables.
Where sources disagree
- Total incarcerated population, Idaho, FY2021: the narrative text of IDOC's own FY2021 report publishes 8,515. IDOC's FY2021 report states in a sentence that the population fell 2.9% in the fiscal year, from 8,775 to 8,515. The same report's Facility Type table and its status totals for June 30, 2021 each sum to 8,518, and the FY2022 report restates the facility rows without changing that sum. This dataset carries no total for FY2021, because IDOC prints one only in that sentence and it does not agree with the tables the rest of this dataset is read from.
- Total incarcerated population, Idaho, FY2023: the Bureau of Justice Statistics, National Prisoner Statistics publishes 9,829. IDOC counts 9,332 people incarcerated on June 30, 2023. The Bureau of Justice Statistics counts 9,829 under Idaho's jurisdiction on December 31, 2023. The two are six months apart in a period when the population was rising, and they count different things: IDOC's figure is who it holds, in state prisons, reentry centers, county jails and a contracted Arizona facility, while the Bureau's is who Idaho is legally responsible for wherever they are held. Both are correct for what each measures.
