Caveats

  • Idaho districts and charter schools count official fall enrollment ('membership') as of the first day of October or the nearest prior school day; the value is non-weighted, meaning a student concurrently enrolled in more than one district or charter is counted in each.
  • Charter school enrollment is already included within the statewide public_school_enrollment total: the statewide total is the sum of every district and charter LEA's membership for that year, verified directly against the 2025-26 figures (314,063 statewide equals the sum of all 192 district and charter rows for that year).
  • period is the calendar year the school year begins in: period 2024 is school year 2024-25.
  • No district-to-county crosswalk exists in either source workbook, so only statewide totals are published here; county-level enrollment could not be sourced from SDE's enrollment files.
  • The 2012-13 and 2013-14 charter totals (18,781.5 and 19,366.5) and the 2014-15 total (19,700.38) carry a fractional student count exactly as SDE's workbook publishes it, from at least one charter school counted at a partial-year FTE rather than a whole headcount; stored as printed rather than rounded.
  • NCES's Common Core of Data reports a different fall 2022 Idaho enrollment figure (317,555, from Digest of Education Statistics table 208.40) than SDE's fall 2022 membership count used here (318,979); both are kept and the disagreement is recorded below rather than reconciled, since the two agencies define the count differently (NCES CCD state-reported enrollment vs. SDE's own fall LEA membership count).

Where sources disagree

  • education.public_school_enrollment, 16, 2022: nces publishes 317555. NCES Digest of Education Statistics table 208.40 (fall 2022 state enrollment, from the CCD State Nonfiscal survey) reports 317,555 for Idaho, versus SDE's own fall 2022 membership count of 318,979 used for education.public_school_enrollment. Idaho's SDE count is the state's fall LEA membership; NCES's CCD figure is the state-reported total NCES compiles for that survey year and can differ slightly in scope or count date.

Measures

  • Public school enrollment (people): Idaho statewide fall public school enrollment (non-weighted membership headcount), by school year. The period is the calendar year the school year begins in (2024 for school year 2024-25).
  • Charter school enrollment (people): Idaho statewide fall charter school enrollment (non-weighted membership headcount), by school year; already included within education.public_school_enrollment. period is the calendar year the school year begins in.

Caveats

  • value is the FTE average base salary plus extra/duty pay for the 'Teacher' certificated staff activity, not base salary alone; SDE's certificated salary reports also publish a base-salary-only figure, which is not used here because it is not what NCES table 211.60 reports (confirmed: Idaho's SDE-computed 2019-20 and 2020-21 base+extra averages of $52,875.03 and $51,816.89 round to NCES's published $52,875 and $51,817 for the same years).
  • SDE's statewide certificated salary report does not exist as a standalone document before school year 2016-17 on SDE's current data page, so the Idaho time series starts there rather than earlier.
  • School years 2016-17 and 2017-18 report 'Teacher - Elementary' and 'Teacher - Secondary' as two separate activity rows rather than one combined 'Teacher' row; this dataset combines them into one FTE-weighted average for those two years only.
  • period 2024 (school year 2024-25) is read from SDE's PDF report rather than an Excel file, because SDE did not publish an Excel version of the certificated report for that year; the PDF prints whole-dollar figures with no cents, unlike the Excel-sourced years which carry full decimal precision.
  • The interstate comparison (every geography other than Idaho, period 2021) is for school year 2021-22, the newest year NCES's Digest of Education Statistics table 211.60 has published as of retrieval (the current, 2022, Digest edition; the 2023 and 2024 editions do not yet carry an updated version of this table). It is not the same year as Idaho's own newest SDE figure (2024, school year 2024-25); comparing Idaho's 2024 SDE figure against other states' 2021 NCES figures compares different years.
  • Idaho's own period-2021 observation comes from SDE, not NCES, to keep one value per (metric, geo, period); NCES's Idaho figure for the same year ($54,232) matches SDE's ($54,231.60 rounded) within a dollar.
  • publisherUpdated (2025-04) is SDE's stamped date for the primary source; no separate publisher-stamped date was found on nces.ed.gov for table 211.60 itself, only that it belongs to the 2022 Digest of Education Statistics edition.

Measures

  • Average teacher salary (usd): Average annual salary (base salary plus extra/duty pay) of public school teachers, by year. Idaho is a full annual time series from SDE; every other state and the US total is the newest year NCES's Digest of Education Statistics table 211.60 publishes.
