  • Vehicle miles traveled (VM-2) is an estimate from each state's own travel monitoring program, not a direct count.
  • Traffic fatalities (FI-20) are Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) counts as FHWA republishes them by functional system.
  • Vehicle registrations (MV-1) count registered vehicles, not owners; one business or agency vehicle counts once regardless of drivers.
  • The licensed-drivers table (DL-1C) starts in 2010 in this republication; earlier years are not available through this source.
  • No source table prints a state total for its category breakdown; a state total here is summed from the categories.
  • Puerto Rico appears in the source tables but is excluded here; it is not in this site's geography list.
  • Idaho's MV-1 vehicle-registration total rises from 1,378,190 in 2010 to 1,625,204 in 2011, about 18 percent. The increase concentrates in the Truck, Private (up 166,972) and Auto, Private (up 68,546) categories; FHWA's published MV-1 table carries no footnote for Idaho in either year explaining the change.
  • Some MV-1 rows, Idaho's included, carry a fractional vehicle count (for example, Idaho's 2012 Auto, Private row is 571,308.21) as FHWA's republication prints it. This dataset stores the figure as printed rather than rounding it.

  • Totals for 2010-2019 are Vintage 2019 estimates and 2020-2025 are Vintage 2025; a change across 2019 to 2020 includes the revision between vintages.

Where sources disagree

  • Population, Idaho, 2020: U.S. Census Bureau, 2020 Census apportionment counts publishes 1,839,106. The Population Estimates base for April 1, 2020 is 1,839,123, 17 more than the 1,839,106 apportionment count. The 2020 to 2025 estimates build forward from that base.
