Measures

MeasureWhat it measuresUnit
Total energy consumption per capitaTotal energy consumed from all sources and sectors, divided by population, for a calendar year. Every state, DC and the US.million btu
Total energy expenditures per capitaTotal dollars spent on energy from all sources and sectors, divided by population, for a calendar year. Every state, DC and the US. Published for 1970 to 2024.usd
Energy consumption by sourceTotal energy consumed for a calendar year, broken out by energy source (petroleum, natural gas, coal, hydropower, wind, solar, geothermal, biomass, nuclear, and net electricity imports). Idaho and the US only.billion btu
Energy consumption by sectorTotal energy consumed for a calendar year, broken out by end-use sector (residential, commercial, industrial, transportation). Idaho and the US only.billion btu

Caveats

  • The State Energy Data System (SEDS) revises prior years at every release, not just the newest year, so a figure here can change on the next refresh even for a year already published.
  • Per-capita figures divide by the Census Bureau population estimate EIA applies for that state and year, not a population figure computed elsewhere on this site.
  • SEDS runs about 18 months behind the current year: the complete update each June carries final data only through two years prior.
  • Total energy expenditures per capita is published for 1970 to 2024; every other measure in this dataset runs 1960 to 2024.
  • Energy consumption by source and by sector store each published series exactly as SEDS prints it, in billion British thermal units; sources are not combined or subtracted from one another, so summing every category will not equal a separately published total energy figure.
  • The "net electricity imports" category is SEDS's net interstate flow of electricity and its associated losses: positive when the state was a net importer for the year, negative when it was a net exporter.
  • Wind, solar, geothermal and nuclear consumption are stored as zero for years before that source existed in a state, exactly as SEDS publishes them; a zero is a published figure, not a missing one.
