Caveats

  • A barrel is 31 gallons, as the report states.
  • Production is beer brewed in the state, which is not beer drunk in the state; a large brewery ships most of what it makes elsewhere.
  • Taxable removals are beer leaving a brewery for sale, which is a measure of what was shipped and taxed rather than of what residents consumed.
  • TTB publishes these figures quarterly and this repository's period vocabulary has no quarter, so each annual figure is the sum of that year's four quarterly reports; a year is a figure only where all four quarters are published and the state reports in all four, and a state missing from one quarter carries no figure for that year rather than a total of the remaining three.
  • A cell the report prints as a dash is not reported and produces no observation; it is not treated as zero, because the same tables print an explicit zero elsewhere.
  • Taxable removals begin in 2025. Earlier editions print no single taxable removals column: a merged header spans three sub-columns, in bottles and cans, in kegs, and tax-determined for premises use, and because a sub-column can read as a dash where another reads zero, a dash is not reported rather than none, so no total can be summed from them without understating it. Those years contribute production only.
  • The third quarter of 2024 is published under a title naming its month rather than its quarter, so the puller reads a month name as well as a quarter number; missing it voided the whole of 2024 under the all-four-quarters rule.

Measures

  • Beer produced (barrels): Beer produced in the state during the year, in barrels of 31 gallons, summed from the four quarterly state reports.
  • Beer removed for sale (barrels): Beer removed from breweries in the state subject to tax during the year, in barrels of 31 gallons, summed from the four quarterly state reports.

Brewery Count by State

Caveats

  • Counts breweries holding an active TTB Brewer's Notice as of December 31 of each year, not breweries that shipped beer that year.
  • A brewery that is bankrupt, under a cease-and-desist order, on hold for a violation, or pending revocation is counted in a nationwide 'Other' total the source publishes outside the state breakdown, and is not included in any state's count here.
  • The publisher withholds a state's count for a year when it has no reportable data; that state has no observation for that year rather than a zero.

Measures

  • Breweries (count): Number of breweries holding an active federal Brewer's Notice, as of December 31.
