Caveats

  • A death counts in FARS if it occurs within 30 days of a crash on a public road.
  • The county recorded is where the crash occurred, not where the person who died lived.
  • FARS is a census of fatal motor vehicle crashes compiled from state crash and death records, not a sample.
  • The newest year available may be an early release later revised as a final annual file.

Measures

  • Traffic deaths (count): Persons killed in motor vehicle crashes, from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System's ACCIDENT file.
