Measures

MeasureWhat it measuresUnit
Age-adjusted death rate by leading cause, 12 months endingProvisional deaths from a leading cause per 100,000 residents, age-adjusted to the 2000 U.S. standard population, in the 12 months ending in the named month.per 100k

Caveats

  • Each figure is age-adjusted to the 2000 U.S. standard population and covers the 12 months ending in the named month, on a provisional count that CDC still revises as death certificates finish processing.
  • A cause tied to an external event (suicide, homicide, drug overdose, a firearm or a fall) takes longer for a medical examiner or coroner to code than a natural cause like cancer or heart disease, so these causes are consistently a quarter or two further behind than the rest; a missing recent quarter is not yet published, not a zero.
  • This dataset carries a rate for every state, but only Idaho's and the nation's are pulled here; this site's cross-state comparison of leading causes of death is the older, final NCHS series covering 1999 to 2017.
